Our Founder Zara Gemiylan Shares Her Inspiring Story on the “Kat on the Loose” Podcast

From Heartbreak to Healing: The Inspiring Story Behind West Valley Detox

Behind every mission to heal is a story of profound personal experience. For Zara Gemiylan—a former beauty queen, powerhouse entrepreneur, and the co-founder of West Valley Detox & Treatment Services—that story is one of resilience, empathy, and a deep-seated passion for saving lives. In a recent, powerful interview on the Kat on the Loose podcast, Zara shared her incredible journey from witnessing the devastation of addiction in her own life to creating one of the top rehab centers in Los Angeles, California. Listen to the full podcast episode here.

Her story is a testament to the fact that addiction is not a distant problem; it is a force that touches families everywhere. It’s a story of how one person’s courage to break a cycle of pain can become a beacon of hope for countless others.

A Personal Journey Through the Pain of Addiction

Long before she was a leader in the recovery community, Zara was a young wife navigating a difficult and painful marriage. She was married for six years to a man who, despite achieving immense professional success, was battling a severe alcohol addiction that spiraled to include gambling, drugs, and infidelity. Zara found herself trapped, not only by the fear of her husband’s behavior but also by cultural expectations. “In my culture, once you’re married, that’s your man,” she shared on the podcast.

The emotional toll was immense. Zara’s family saw her falling into a deep depression, a shadow of her former self. “My family saw me depressed, and they knew that I was scared of him,” she recalled. With their unwavering support, she found the strength to get a divorce. But the struggle didn’t end there. In the aftermath, Zara found herself drinking heavily, isolated on her couch, and feeling a profound sense of disconnection from her own identity. “This isn’t me,” she realized. This moment of clarity was the beginning of a new path.

Finding Purpose in Helping Others

After leaving her marriage, Zara joined her family’s construction business, but it wasn’t her true calling. “It wasn’t my passion,” she admitted. Her purpose became clear when she began working as a spokeswoman for the “Women in Need Foundation.” There, surrounded by women who shared similar stories—either struggling with their own substance use or with an addicted partner—she felt heard and understood. She had found her passion. “Right place at the right time,” Zara reflected. “God put me in that situation for a reason.”

This experience ignited a fire in her to create a safe haven for others. The idea was further catalyzed by a family tragedy when her brother lost a close friend to an overdose. When Zara pitched the idea of opening a treatment program, her brother didn’t hesitate, immediately offering to partner with her. Together, they channeled their experiences into a shared mission, and West Valley Detox & Treatment Services was born. Today, their vision has grown to three premier rehab facilities throughout Los Angeles County in the cities of Tarzana, Sherman Oaks, and Woodland Hills.

Zara Gemiylan’s Insights on Addiction and the “Functional Alcoholic”

Zara’s personal and professional journey has given her a unique and compassionate perspective on the nature of addiction. “It kills the person, but it also kills the family,” she stated, a sentiment powerfully echoed by the podcast host, who shared her own tragic story of losing both her mother and husband to alcoholism. Zara firmly believes that drugs and alcohol are more powerful than any individual, regardless of their profession or success.

She spoke about the danger of the “functional alcoholic”—the person who drinks heavily but believes no one notices because they are still holding down a job and socializing. “A lot of times it does show and triggers red flags, even though the individual doesn’t think it is known,” Zara explained. Her definition of true health is clear: “You need to be functioning without drinking. You need to be okay.”

For those questioning their own habits, her advice is simple but profound: “If you need a drink to get over an obstacle, you may need help.” In her own family, she says, “we don’t drink to overcome something; we drink to celebrate.”

What Is the First Step to Recovery?

With years of experience helping thousands of clients, Zara’s advice for someone who thinks they might need help is rooted in the power of self-awareness. The most important part of the journey is not the final destination, but the first courageous step of admission.

“Realizing you need help,” she says, is “90% of the way there.” That moment of recognizing you have a problem is the turning point where healing becomes possible. It is the moment you stop fighting a battle alone and open yourself up to the possibility of professional support.
