What is Ecstasy?
The scientific name for Ecstasy is MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine). MDMA was first synthesized in 1912 by a German pharmaceutical company and was patented in 1914 as a possible appetite suppressant, but it was never used for any medical purpose.
MDMA causes the brain to surge with serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. However, as the effect of the drug is reduced by the body breaking it down, the brain produces less serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, causing anxiety, confusion, depression, and sleep issues.
What are the Signs & Symptoms of Ecstasy Addiction?
There are thousands of hospital admissions attributed to the use of Ecstasy that has led to overdose and possible death.
The cause of overdose and or death are due to the following:
- Multiple doses are taken in one session
- Uncontrolled drug manufacturing
- Hyperthermia or overheating when taking ecstasy
- Undiagnosed heart defects can be aggravated by the drug resulting in heart failure
After the detox process is complete, recovery work with substance use disorder professionals aims to change the thoughts and behaviors that contribute to and maintain ecstasy use. This part of the recovery process is best supported in a residential level of care where there is around-the-clock supervision, intensive addiction therapy, and ongoing medical support.
