When you share that you’re no longer drinking, people might be freaked out by your decision; you may have just thrown a wrench in their search for their own OK-ness, taken away part of their own confirmation of their behavior and lifestyle. People choose to be sober for several reasons, from their mental health to medical conditions. Hearing the reasons others chose to go sober can also be comforting and inspirational. So here are 5 celebrities who choose to live a drug-free life. They won their addiction!
1. Mel Gibson
Gibson once said that he started drinking at a very young age. He said, "I had really good highs but some very low lows. I found out recently I'm manic depressive. He struggled with alcohol addiction for many years. Gibson has been sober for 12 years now.
2. Robert Downey, Jr.
Although actor Robert Downey Jr. first tried drugs at the young age of six, it wasn’t until 1996 that he faced his first drug-related arrest. Finally going to drug rehab in 2003, Downey won his battle with drug addiction and has been clean for nearly 15 years and has had huge success in Hollywood. After a troubling period with drug abuse, Downey Jr. has achieved an inspiring comeback from addiction.
3. Russel Brand
As a teenager, Russell Brand said he started using drugs and alcohol. He left his mother’s house at the age of 16 after disagreeing with her partner and soon started using drugs. He was also treated for depression and had problems binge eating”. Brand said that he needed constant vigilance to stay sober, but has been clean since 2003, crediting the 12 Steps as well as daily yoga and meditation, for his recovery. After Amy Winehouse’s death, he started the fund Give It Up to raise funds for abstinence-based recovery.
4. Justin Bieber
Young pop star, Justin Bieber, started his journey to recovery in 2014 after years of making headlines for his bad behavior and drug use. The “Sorry” singer admits his drug use “got pretty dark”, that he had a “problem with sex”, and that he suffered from depression while touring. Since going through detox, he’s now able to drink socially but has avoided narcotics since.
5. Britney Spears
Britney Spears, 37, made headlines again this April, after checking into a mental health center. While the hashtag #FreeBritney circulated on social media, others were reminded that the singer has sought treatment multiple times since 2007 for her mental health. Spears had admitted to being diagnosed with bipolar disorder and suffering from postpartum depression in the past. Drugs and alcohol often aggravate symptoms of some mental health disorders. Spears has admitted to excessive drinking, “dabbling” with drugs, and being a “smoker”.
5. Gerard Butler
Before becoming an actor Gerard Butler was an alcohol addict who was fired from his job in an Edinburgh law firm for drinking. He overcame his alcohol addiction, completed a successful course of treatment and has returned home in good health, moving to London and started acting.
